Sigurður Stefán Jónsson was born in Húsavík in 1958, spent his childhood in Keflavík and moved to Reykavík as a teenager. He studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating with a BFA degree in Photography in 1986. Since then he has worked at photography in various contexts.

After qualifying, Sigurður worked as a photographer for nearly three years in New York.  In 1989 he returned to Iceland and set up his own business, first under the name of SSJ ljósmyndun, later under the name Fotografika.
