Gerðuberg

Handicraft and coffee session

Gerðuberg holds handicraft and coffee sessions on the first Wednesday evening of each month, the aim being to offer a cosy evening atmosphere where guests can have coffee and refreshment, chat and do a bit of handicraft. There are short and interesting presentations, sometimes with some practical teaching, according to the theme of the evening. These coffee and handicraft sessions, which begin at 8.00 p.m. and end at 10.00 p.m., are free.

Capture the Colours of Nature! An introduction to plant dyes

Would you like to learn to dye wool using natural dyes from Icelandic plants? Sigrún Helgadóttir and Þorgerður Hlöðversdóttir will be demonstrating plant dyeing at the first craft and coffee evening of this autumn. With showing samples of plants and plant-dyed wool, they will explain the secrets of plant dyeing, an activity that combines an experience of nature, outdoor life, the cultural traditions of ages past and a useful handicraft skill.

Monkey business decorative knots.

Björn Finnsson teaches the art of tying knots; all participants will learn how to make a “monkey’s hand”, a decorative knot-pattern that forms a ball that can be used for various purposes, e.g. as a key-ring or as a toy for a dog.  Materials will be provided, and guests will be able to take their “monkey’s hands” home with them. Tying knots is not only for scouts: it is fun for everyone, young and old.

Making oriental flower decoration from wire and coloured nylon stockings

Beautiful flower decorations can be made using wire and coloured nylon stockings, and they have the advantage of outlasting natural flowers and also requiring no watering.  Jeab (Sirivorraluck Boonsart) will be teaching this oriental art, which has virtually endless possibilities, the only limit lying in the imagination of the artist. All materials are provided.

Christmas decorations

Scissors and paper are all that are needed to create beautiful Christmas decorations. In this evening session, Kristín Arngrímsdóttir will be teaching guests how to make cut-out decorations. Kristín will be showing samples of her own work and demonstrating the simpler cuts.  Snowflakes and angels are among the popular decorative patterns.  Paper and scissors are easily available, so everyone should be able to go on at home after learning the basics.
